Sallie Mae announces officer promotions

RESTON, Va., Feb. 13, 2008—SLM Corporation (NYSE: SLM), commonly known as Sallie Mae and the nation’s leading saving- and paying-for-college company, today announced the following officer promotions:

Mark Daly was promoted to senior vice president, corporate finance. He joined Sallie Mae in 1992 and oversees the company’s secured financing programs, including the replacement funding for the interim facility from the proposed buyout. Prior to Sallie Mae, he worked as a financial analyst with Perpetual Real Estate Services in McLean, Va. Mr. Daly holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Brown University and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Maryland.

Mary Eure was promoted to senior vice president and corporate secretary. She joined Sallie Mae in 1988 and works closely with the SLM Board of Directors and executive management and oversees the company’s corporate governance and equity programs. Ms. Eure earned a Bachelor of Science degree from North Carolina State University and a law degree from the Wake Forest University School of Law.

Mark L. Heleen was promoted to senior vice president and deputy general counsel. He joined Sallie Mae in 1998 and is responsible for all legal matters for the financing and derivative transactions of the company, including the recent equity offering and replacement of the interim facility. Prior to Sallie Mae, he worked as an attorney for PNC Bank and Tucker Arensberg, PC in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Mr. Heleen obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Bucknell University and his law degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

Steve McGarry was promoted to senior vice president, investor relations. He joined Sallie Mae in 1997 and leads daily contact with the company’s external shareholders and analysts. Previously, he led Sallie Mae’s investments activity. Prior to Sallie Mae, he worked at Toronto Dominion Bank. Mr. McGarry holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from SUNY College at Stony Brook and a Master of Business Administration degree in finance from New York University.

Ted Morris was promoted to senior vice president and controller. He joined Sallie Mae in 2003 and is responsible for all areas of accounting operations, accounting policy, corporate tax, financial reporting and financial systems. Previously at Sallie Mae, he oversaw the company’s accounting of debt, derivatives, investments and capital market activity. Prior to joining Sallie Mae, he served as a senior audit manager at Ernst & Young, LLP and held a similar role at Arthur Anderson, LLP. Mr. Morris earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in accounting from the University of Virginia and is a certified public accountant.

Rich Nickel was promoted to senior vice president and president, USA Funds Services division. He joined Sallie Mae through the Southwest Student Services acquisition in 2004. Mr. Nickel directs the promotion of USA Funds and NELA guarantees and those guarantors’ default prevention and debt education programs to colleges and universities. Prior to Sallie Mae, he held positions at Bank One’s Education One Group, Student Loan Funding Resources and the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority. Mr. Nickel received a Bachelor of Arts degree in telecommunications from the University of Kentucky.

Steve O’Connell was promoted to senior vice president, structured finance. He joined Sallie Mae in 1985 and oversees the modeling, structuring and analysis of SLM Corporation’s asset-backed securities and serves as the company’s principal interface with the analytic groups at investment banks and the structured finance side of the bond-rating agencies. Previously at Sallie Mae, Mr. O’Connell held positions in loan accounting and financial planning and analysis. Before joining Sallie Mae, he was an accountant at First Boston Capital Group. Mr. O’Connell holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland and a Master of Business Administration degree in finance from George Washington University.

Eric Reicin was promoted to senior vice president and deputy general counsel. He joined Sallie Mae in 1999 and leads litigation, employment law and intellectual property issues for the corporation and also manages legal support for the Asset Performance Group and the IT division. Prior to joining Sallie Mae in 1999, he worked as an attorney at the Washington, D.C. office of Anchorage-based law firm Birch, Horton and as an attorney at Laner, Muchin in Chicago. Mr. Reicin earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and political science from the University of Michigan and a law degree from the University of Illinois in Champaign.

Guido van der Ven was promoted to senior vice president, corporate finance. He joined Sallie Mae in 1989 and serves on the company’s securitization structuring team and manages the company’s pension- and benefit-related investment portfolios. Additionally, he is responsible for all debt investor relations and regulatory relations for capital markets. Prior to joining Sallie Mae, he worked for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and for Chemical Bank. Mr. van der Ven received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from SUNY Geneseo, a Master of Arts degree in applied economics from Binghamton University and a Master of Business Administration degree in finance and investments from George Washington University.

Joe Freda was promoted to vice president and controller, Asset Performance Group. He joined Sallie Mae in 2004 through the Arrow Financial Services acquisition and directs accounting and financial reporting for the six subsidiaries of the Asset Performance Group. Mr. Freda holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the University of Illinois, Urbana/Champaign and both a Master of Science in accountancy and a Master of Business Administration degree from DePaul University.

Cathleen Harmon was promoted to vice president, loan originations. She joined Sallie Mae in 1992 and oversees originations staff that manage more than 4,000 college and university relationships. Ms. Harmon received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana State University.

Steve Hauber was promoted to vice president, portfolio reporting and analysis. He joined Sallie Mae in 2003 and oversees the company’s reporting and analysis on its private loan portfolio. Mr. Hauber received both a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and a Master of Accounting degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Martha Holler was promoted to vice president, corporate communications. She joined Sallie Mae in 1996, serves as a company spokesperson, and directs media relations as well as school and customer advocacy communications. Ms. Holler earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and mathematics, cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and a Master of Business Administration degree in finance and marketing from George Mason University.

Michael Hynes was promoted to vice president, leadership development and employee communications. He joined Sallie Mae in 1992 and manages corporate-wide leadership initiatives, employee and executive communications and sales meetings and events. Mr. Hynes received a Bachelor of Arts degree in foreign languages and English from Assumption College and a Master of Education in human resource development from Boston University.

Zachary Lewy was promoted to vice president and CEO of Arrow Global. He joined Sallie Mae in 2005 and has grown the Arrow Global business from inception to more than $1.85 billion in purchased and financed receivables in England, Poland, Slovakia and Portugal. Mr. Lewy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics with honors and a certificate in applied and computational mathematics from Princeton University.

Christy Marble was promoted to vice president, consumer marketing. She joined Sallie Mae in 2003 and oversees all aspects of brand and consumer marketing for Sallie Mae’s loan products. Ms. Marble earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Pepperdine University and a Master of Business Administration degree from The Anderson School at University of California, Los Angeles.

Roger Miller was promoted to vice president, systems development. He joined Sallie Mae in 1989 and manages IT activities related to major systems releases, key customer initiatives for the company’s loan servicing system and payroll/human resource systems. Mr. Miller holds a Bachelor of Science degree in information systems from George Mason University.

Rob Nadler was promoted to vice president, Asset Performance Group business development. He joined Sallie Mae in 1998 and oversees the Asset Performance Group’s sales force and client relations. Mr. Nadler obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing from Ithaca College.

Suvendu Pal was promoted to vice president, financial planning and analysis. He joined Sallie Mae in 2003 and develops the company’s financial projections on the company’s income and expenses. Mr. Pal earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Tufts University and a Master of Business Administration degree in finance from Duke University.

Susan Parkhill was promoted to vice president, call center operations. She joined Sallie Mae in 1990 and is responsible for the company’s repayment consumer call centers, which field 9 million customer service calls annually. Ms. Parkhill holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in marketing from Cameron University.

Patrick Ryan was promoted to vice president, financial systems. He joined Sallie Mae in 2002 and manages the company’s finance, planning and forecasting, data warehousing, loan accounting and payroll systems. Mr. Ryan received a Bachelor of Science degree from Providence College and a Master of Business Administration degree from American University.

Kara West was promoted to vice president, risk assessment. She joined Sallie Mae in 2006 and oversees implementation and monitoring of SOX compliance, internal controls and internal audit. She also leads the disclosure and data assurance team. Ms. West earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Virginia.
